The Temple: new Session on Wednesdays

Temple.jpg

From Moses’ simple tabernacle in the wilderness to Herod’s massive edifice in the time of Jesus, the temple played a central role in the life and faith of God’s people. In this study, we will consider the who, what, and where (and especially the why) of this pivotal Israelite shrine.

Nov. 29, Session 1 – Introduction: What Temple and Why? Not one temple, but many: tabernacle, Solomon, Ezekiel, Ezra, Herod, Revelation. What is the purpose of the Israelite cult?

Dec. 6, Session 2 – From the Tabernacle to Solomon’s Temple. Structure of both. What was the purpose of the tabernacle (and temple)? What did it represent?

Dec. 13, Session 3 – Herod’s Temple and Its Fiercest Critic. Structure of Herod’s Temple. Jesus’ interaction with the temple. Key temple scenes in the life of Jesus.

Jeff Leonard of Samford University leads us in this 3-week study of the ancient Jewish temple starting on Wednesday, November 29. Jeff is Associate Professor of Religion and specializes in the areas of Hebrew, Hebrew Bible, and the ancient Near East. Class meets on 11/29, 12/6 and 12/13 at 5:50 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
